In step three we switch from what you want, to what you currently have. Part of this process is to take stock of your current technology, but also get a sense for your building and the challenges that may exist.
Things to consider, research, or find out:
- Do you currently have a video system in place?
- Do you currently have an audio system in place?
- Are you planning to reuse any of your current equipment?
- Would you like to augment what you have?
- How much needs to be replaced?
- Do you have favorite brands or pieces of gear that you like?
- What is your current sound system or PA system?
- What do you have for microphones, speakers, amps?
- Do you have blueprints for your church?
- Do you know who installed the current electronics?
- Do you know when things were installed?
- Do you have conduit or space to run cables?
- How large is your building?
- Are there elements in your current system that cause friction or annoyance?
- Is there anything that you would like to simplify with your current setup?
- Are there elements you don't understand about your current wiring or system?
- Are there limitations you are hoping to overcome?
- Does anything need fixing?
Some of these questions might require research. It's possible the people or companies that installed your system are no longer around. Or things were done so long ago no one remembers. It's good to get as much information as possible about the current setup and building. The size of the sanctuary and even the church aesthetics are good things to make notes about at this stage.
You might need to bring in property management, custodian, electrician, or historian for some of these questions. If this step is a struggle, it might be a good time to reach out to a professional who can help you sort out your current setup and figure out how things actually work.
